Founded in 1900, the College Board is a not-for-profit educational association that supports academic preparation and transition to higher education for students around the world through the ongoing collaboration of its member schools, colleges , universities, educational systems and organizations. In all of its activities, the Board promotes equity through universal access to high standards of teaching and learning and sufficient financial resources so that every student has the opportunity to succeed in college and work. Acknowledgments The Amish have long known and demonstrated that many hands make light of heavy work. We have raised no barns, but we earnestly hope we have heightened awareness of the formidable personal and policy obstacles the children of low-socioeconomic-status families confront in trying to continue their education beyond high school. In doing so (if we have, indeed, succeeded), we have incurred debts to many colleagues , and we wish to acknowledge gratefully the many people who helped make our work lighter. formerly of the College Board's office of policy analysis, supported us in every way from start to finish. They provided encouragement, guidance , and financial support, but most important, savvy insights into the higher education policy world to which this report is directed. Without them, this barn would never have made it off the ground. We are particularly indebted to Clifford Adelman, senior research analyst in the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Educational Research and Improvement. Very few people are as familiar as he is with the contents, specifications, anomalies , and limitations of the national databases we used. Throughout the project, as both technical advisor and reviewer , he helped us avoid a host of conceptual and methodologi-cal misconstructions. Most important, however, he (and his work) set a high standard for both analytical and conceptual precision. and Thanos Patelis also contributed references and, more important, constructive reviews of an early draft of this report. We deeply appreciate the care and comprehensiveness of their reviews. A number of other professional colleagues with serious barn-raising experience in this area contributed ideas, cautions , leads, and …

Endogenous swimming rhythms underlying the spawning migration of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus: ontogeny and variation with ambient tidal regime

Spawning female blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus, use ebb-tide transport (ETT) to migrate seaward. In estuaries with semi-diurnal tides, ETT in ovigerous blue crabs is driven by a circatidal rhythm in vertical swimming in which crabs ascend into the water column during ebb tide. The ontogeny of this rhythm was examined by monitoring swimming behavior of females before the pubertal molt, females ...

Stringy and Membranic Theory of Swimming of Micro - organisms ∗

When the swimming of microorganisms is viewed from the string and membrane theories coupled to the velocity field of the fluid, a number of interesting results are derived; 1) importance of the area (or volume) preserving algebra, 2) usefulness of the N-point Reggeon (membranic) amplitudes, and of the gas to liquid transition in case of the red tide issues, 3) close relation between the red tid...

Sublethal effects of Texas brown tide on Streblospio benedicti (Polychaeta) larvae.

The Texas brown tide bloom is noted for a concordant decline in benthic biomass and species diversity. However, the link between harmful effects induced by Texas brown tide and benthos has not been demonstrated. It has been proposed there may be a larval bottleneck, where larvae, but not adults, suffer adverse effects. This study was performed to test the effect of brown tide alga, Aureoumbra l...

Collective Motion of Micro-organisms from Field Theoretical Viewpoint

We analyze the collective motion of micro-organisms in the fluid and consider the problem of the red tide. The red tide is produced by the condensation of the micro-organisms, which might be a similar phenomenon to the condensation of the strings. We propose a model of the generation of the red tide. By considering the interaction between the micro-organisms mediated by the velocity fields in t...

Spontaneous Increase of Magnetic Flux and Chiral-Current Reversal in Bosonic Ladders: Swimming against the Tide.

The interplay between spontaneous symmetry breaking in many-body systems, the wavelike nature of quantum particles and lattice effects produces an extraordinary behavior of the chiral current of bosonic particles in the presence of a uniform magnetic flux defined on a two-leg ladder. While noninteracting as well as strongly interacting particles, stirred by the magnetic field, circulate along t...

Space station image captures a red tide ciliate bloom at high spectral and spatial resolution.

Mesodinium rubrum is a globally distributed nontoxic ciliate that is known to produce intense red-colored blooms using enslaved chloroplasts from its algal prey. Although frequent enough to have been observed by Darwin, blooms of M. rubrum are notoriously difficult to quantify because M. rubrum can aggregate into massive clouds of rusty-red water in a very short time due to its high growth rate...
